Köşk Mound

Köşk Mound
Köşk Höyük

The Köşk Mound, which is located on the rocky slope to the east of the Roman pool in the town Bahçeli in Niğde Province, shows us that the oldest community (6050 – 4911 B.C.) involved in agriculture and animal husbandry on the Bor plain settled here. The ongoing excavations are being conducted by the Archaeology Department of the Language and Histo-Geographic Faculty of Ankara University and archaeologists from Niğde Museum since 1982.
Niğde ili, Bahçeli beldesinde Roma havuzunun doğusundaki kayalık yamaç üzerinde yer alan Köşk Höyük’te, 1981 yılından beri Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih Coğrafya Fakültesi Arkeoloji Bölümü ve Niğde Müzesi arkeologları tarafından sürdürülen kazılar, Bor ovasının en eski tarım ve hayvancılıkla uğraşan toplumunun (M.Ö.6050–4911) bu alana yerleştiğini göstermektedir.

There are five layers of settlement of which the first four layers belong to the Late Neolithic Period and the latest layer belongs to the Early Chalcolithic Period.
Beş tabaka halindeki yerleşimin ilk dört tabakası Geç Neolitik, en geç tabakası ise Erken Kalkolitik devre aittir.

Considering what was necessary in the Neolithic Period there exists here architecture of spacious many roomed small residences.
Neolitik dönemde gereksinime göre genişletilen çok odalı küçük mekânlardan oluşan mimari mevcuttur.

In the Chalcolit-hic Period the dwellings were built according to a clear plan being arranged next to one another on adjacent streets.
Kalkolitik dönemde ise sokakların üstüne sıralanan bitişik düzendeki konutlar belli bir plana göre inşa edilmiştir.

It appears that in this period that the dead were buried under the foors of the dwellings.

Bu dönem insanlarının, ölülerini konutların tabanına gömdükleri anlaşılmaktadır.

Of particular importance is the custom of burying the dead at Köşk Mound; many of the adults and some of the children had their heads separated from the body of which the faces were then plastered with clay and the facial features picked out in red paint giving them a striking appearance.

Köşk Höyük’ün ölü gömme âdeti açısından önemi; çoğu yetişkin ve bazı çocuklara uygulanan başın gövdeden ayrılarak yüzün kille sıvanıp, yüz organlarının belirtilmesi ve aşı boyası ile boyanarak onlara canlılık kazandırılmasıdır.

This practise is also evident between the years 10,000 to 8,000 B.C. in Palestine, Israel and the south of Syria.

Bu uygulama, Filistin, İsrail, Ürdün ve güney Suriye’de M.Ö. 10000–8000 arasında görülmektedir.
