EDİRNE (TR) - KASTANIES (GR) 32 KM BIKE TOUR [PART 1/2]
Then we cycled back to the town again. We got around in streets and rode to the exit of town. We took the highway to Bulgaria direction. After we rode for a while on highway, we cycled back to the centre of Kastanies. We had a seat at Stavro’s restaurant.
Kasabaya geri döndük, sokaklarda biraz turladıktan sonra çıkışa doğru sürdük. Otoyola girdik ve Bulgaristan yönünde ilerledik. Biraz yol yaptıktan sonra tekrar Kastanies’e geldik. Stavro’nun restoranına oturduk.
Whenever i come to Kastanies, i visit Stavro. He knows a little bit Turkish and he has very delicious food. We ordered grilled pork meat, Ouzo and Greek salad. We tried to talk in three languages with Stavro; Turkish, Greek and English.
Stavro az çok Türkçe konuşabiliyor ve çok lezzetli yemekleri var. Ne zaman Kastanies’e gelsem buraya uğrarım. Izgara domuz fileto, Uzo, Grek salatası söyledik. Stavro’yla Türkçe, Yunanca, İngilizce karışık sohbet etmeye çalıştık.
We met another Turkish cyclist called Cemil and he came to our table. I shared my Ouzo and we talked about bike organizations in Thrace.
Arka masada oturan bir başka bisikletçi Cemil Abi‘yle tanıştık, masamıza geldi. Trakya’daki bisiklet turları hakkında konuştuk.
When we ordered coffees, Stavro called out to coffeshop where is other side of the road. Luka brought our coffees and he speaks Turkish very well.
Stavro’dan kahve isteyince, karşıdaki kahvehaneye seslendi. Kahveleri getiren Luka aynı zamanda buranın eski muhtarıymış ve Türkçe’yi çok iyi biliyordu.
He was the old reeve of Kastanies. We have returned home after visiting free shop. We have cycled 32 km.

Free shop’a uğradıktan sonra eve döndük. Toplamda 32 km yaptık.
We have done a short bike trip between two towns that place different sides of Turkish - Greek Border with my friend Erdu. We departed from our hometown Edirne which was Ottoman capital for 100 years.
Arkadaşım Erdu‘yla Türk - Yunan sınırının iki tarafındaki şehirler arasında kısa bir bisiklet turu gerçekleştirdik.
After we passed two rivers, Tundja and Meriç, we reached Karaağaç district. It was an important recreational town in late Ottoman time. It was called ‘little Paris’. The town was affected from “1923 Exchange of Turkish and Greek Populations“
Edirne‘den yola çıktıktan sonra Tunca ve Meriç Nehirlerini geçip Karaağaç‘a ulaştık. Karaağaç, Osmanlı’nın son yıllarında Frenk usülü eğlencenin merkeziymiş ve ‘küçük Paris’ olarak anılıyormuş. Balkan savaşlarında kaybedildikten sonra Lozan‘da savaş tazminatı olarak Türkiye’ye verilmiş ve mübadeleye uğramış.
After a mini water-break in Karaağaç, we rode to the border of Pazarkule. We showed our passports and then passed to blue-white painted buildings from red-white ones.
Meriç’in diğer tarafındaki tek Türk toprağı. Burada bir su molası verdikten sonra Pazarkule sınır kapısına ilerledik. Pasaportlarımızı önce kırmızı beyaz binada, sonra mavi beyaz binada gösterdikten sonra Kastanies‘e girdik.
Kastanies is a very small town. It hosts one big organization: Ardas Fest takes place every july in beach of Ardas at Kastanies. (This year: 25-29 July) The town is so similar with Karaağaç. Old people know Turkish like in other Evros Region towns.
Kastanies çok küçük bir kasaba ama senede bir kez büyük bir organizasyona ev sahipliği yapıyor: Arda Festivali. Her yıl temmuz ayında Kastanies’teki Arda Nehri kıyısında düzenleniyor. (Bu yıl 25-29 Temmuz)
We rode our bikes to River Ardas where the fest occurs. People come here to picnic and swim. There were Greek, Bulgarian and Roma People having recreational time. Roma People was listening to İbrahim Tatlıses loudly. While i was taking photographs of Roma children, they talked me in Turkish.
Bisikletlerimizle Bu festivalin düzenlendiği alana geldik. Bulgar, Yunan ve Çingeneler piknik yapıp nehre giriyorlardı. Düğün çekimi yapılan gelinle damatın yanı sıra motokrosçular ve kaykaycılar da vardı. Çingeneler son ses İbrahim Tatlıses dinliyordu, fotoğraflarını çektiğim Çingene çocuklarıyla da Türkçe konuştuk.
It sounds like the same Turkish accent at South of Bulgaria (i am from there). A wedding shooting was being made near the river and there were skateboarders and motocross bikers around. There is a motocross track there. There is a level crossing on the river instead of a bridge. It is possible to pass the river with cars or bikes.
Şiveleri bizim Bulgaristan Türkçesiyle aynıydı. Nehrin üzerinde bir hemzemin geçit var ve akan suyun altındaki yoldan karşıya geçebiliyorsunuz.
I have passed the river and turned back, Erdu couldn’t come with me because his bike’s tires are not suitable for this conditions.
