French common sense finally comes through:

Fransız sağduyusu nihayet kendini gösterdi


As I observed Sarkozy’s attitude towards Turkey, I kept saying to myself, “It’s impossible, a big country like France would never turn its back on Turkey for the sake of petty calculations.” On the other hand, his persistence in this attitude gradually increased my disappointment. It really did seem impossible...

Sarkozy’nin Türkiye’ye yaklaşımını izledikçe, kendi kendime “Olamaz, Fransa gibi büyük bir ülke bu kadar küçük hesaplarla, sırtını Türkiye’ye dönemez. Bunda mantık yok”diyordum. Ancak öte yandan da, Sarkozy’nin ısrarlı tutumundan dolayı yavaş yavaş hayal kırıklığım artıyordu.Gerçekten de olamazdı...


The French can be disturbing or annoying, but they also possess a sturdy common sense. You can always find some sort of truth in what they say, even when they are at their most contradictory. They have produced high-quality thinkers with a long-term outlook a healthy approach to matters, even if they do view the world from a very different window.

Fransızlar sizi rahatsız edebilirler. Sinirlendirebilirler, ancak Fransızların sağlam bir mantık yapıları vardır. Genel gidişe ters düşseler dahi, söylediklerinin içinde daima doğrular bulabilirsiniz. Son derece düzeyli düşünürleri vardır. Uzun vadeli bakışı olan, dünyaya farklı pencereden dahi olsa yine de sağlıklı yaklaşırlar.


The fact that Sarkozy placed an article in the constitution that automatically required a referendum for our EU membership later led me to wonder “if the basic qualities and value judgement of France had undergone some changes.”

Sarkozy’nin Anayasa değişikliğinde, adımızı vermeden (bizi ve ilerde de Ukrayna’yı düşünerek) AB üyeliğimizi otomatik referanduma bağlayan bir madde koyması, benim de “Fransa’nın genel kaliteleri ve değer yargılarında acaba değişiklik mi oldu” sorusunu sormama yol açmıştı.


I feel much more at ease now. The French Senate has rejected this article -that had been approved by the National Assembly- with a vote of 297 against 7.

Nihayet rahatladım.Fransız senatosu, 7’ye karşı 297 oyla, Millet Meclisinde kabul edilen bu maddeyi reddetti.


No matter how you interpret it, this result shows that the French political world has not lost its common sense. It becomes even more significant when you think that Sarkozy’s party has the majority in the French Senate.

Kim nasıl yorumlarsa yorumlasın. Bu sonuç, Fransız siyaset dünyasının sağduyusunu kaybetmediğini göstermektedir. Üstelik, Sarkozy’nin partisinin çoğunlukta olduğu bir ortamda reddedilmesinin anlamı daha da önemlidir.


We must never qualify this result with slogans like “Sarkozy’s defeat or a slap on Sarkozy’s face.” Such an approach would constitute a mistake as well as needless provocation against the French President (for Sarkozy can still get what he wants if he insists on it).

Bu sonucu sakın ola ki, “Sarkozy’nin yenilgisi veya Sarkozy’e tokat”filan gibilerinden sloganlarla yorumlamayalım. Bu yaklaşım hem yanlış olur ( zira diretirse Sarkozy istediğini yine elde edebilir.) hem de Fransız C.Başkanı’nın tahrik etmekten başka işe yaramaz.


It would be much better to applaud their common sense and go back to our own business. Let's revive the reforms. I would like to take this opportunity to repeat what I never tire of writing.

İyisi mi, sağduyuyu alkışlamakla yetinelim ve kendi işimize bakalım. Reformları yeniden hareketlendirelim.

…..Bu vesileyle her zaman yazdığımı yeniden tekrarlamak isterim.


Such developments will always happen. Many other Sarkozys and Merkels will come and go. We will go through even worse crises. Never mind. 
Bu tip gelişmelerle hep karşılaşacağız. Nice Sarkozy’ler, Merkel’ler gelip geçecek . Daha derin krizler de yaşayacağız. Hiç takmayın. Biz reformlarımıza bakalım, diğerlerine takılmayalım.

Let’s take care of our reforms and not get hung up on the rest. You can be sure that when we achieve our reforms and go stand before the door, it will be very difficult, not to say impossible, to stop Turkey from going in without risking an enormous international crisis.

 Reformları tamamladığımız ve kapının önüne geldiğimiz zaman emin olun, Türkiye’yi büyük bir Uluslararası krizi göze almadan durdurabilmek imkansız denecek kadar zor olacaktır.
